I'm not against SS because I think I won't get checks, I'm against it because it is a social engineering scheme touted as a "benefit". So what if the theft is done efficiently. It's not very comforting to be told by the police that the folks who robbed you were efficient.

This is true. SS economists say they can simply reduce the benefits. Having said that, most people in my generation think it won't be there for them in any meaningful way, given the projected cuts (that existed before Bush took office, and is printed on SS annual reports for every worker.)

RE: "IOU"

If it helps the books, reduces the deficit, sure make some reductions to get rid of debt. But not if it is redirected to an increase in defense spending or more tax cuts.
