Coug, there was a brief period of time when I was on my way to becoming vegetarian that I though free range meat was an acceptable alternative. Then I found out that the label can be really deceptive. It is often just exactly the same kind of factory farming with all its inherent cruelty, only there is a small fenced yard where theoretically the birds can go.

Now I am not saying that this is the kind of experience the animals you eat will have if you actually know the farmer and can inspect how they live yourself, or if you have chickens or turkeys out back and kill and eat one for your holiday dinner.

But if you are relying on buying commercially grown free range chickens and turkeys, you should beware that it can be just a marketing ploy because the standards are not much better than for factory farms, and the animals do suffer greatly:
