re: The purpose of these taxes is not to have children go to a specific building. The purpose of the taxes is to have the children get educated. If the child is educated somewhere else than a particular public school the public aim of educating the child is still achieved.

So you are saying the folks that opt out of the public school system should get a tax break on their school taxes, while those that have no kids in the system (and in my case never had kids in the system) make up for their deficit?

What if they send their kids to "for profit" private schools, am I supposed to subsidize those schools as well?

What if I build my own road for all my driving, can I "opt out" of the taxes for public roads? What if I have plenty of money to retire on, can I "opt out" of FICA? What if I say, "I'll provide my own defense against terrorism", can I opt out of the portion of my taxes that go to the Iraq war?

We've got a social contract, and I'll abide by that, with enthusiasm. It works, it's why we are a civilized society, it's how we got where we are (or were). We provide for each other, collectively. Society.

But damned if I'm going to subsidize those that are "too good" for the public system. If they don't like it, change it. If not, it's on their tab, not mine.

You can't opt out of our democracy and expect a benefit.
