Mosul base attack was a suicide bombing: report

CTV.ca News Staff

The bombing at a U.S. army base in Iraq that left 22 dead and 72 wounded may have been a suicide attack from an insider, new evidence reveals.

U.S. military investigators found a suicide vest likely used as a backpack and remnants of a torso, ABC News reported.

The military is investigating the explosion in the crowded mess tent where 18 Americans and four Iraqis died as they congregated for lunch Tuesday.

One group with links to al Qaeda has already claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Ansar al-Sunnah Army also posted details about the alleged suicide bomber on a website.

The statement said the 24-year-old man was from Mosul and he worked at the base for two months and provided the group with information. It also said the man hid the explosives in his clothes.

Mosul was a ghost town Wednesday as troops blocked the city's five bridges and armoured vehicles and infantrymen conducted sweeps through neighbourhoods.
