"57 percent of American giving is through religious institutions," according to WSJ as cited by Martin Marty. How much of that 57% goes to something other than sustaining the "religious organizations," i.e. benefitting the disadvantaged domestically and world wide? Even so, that is a lot of giving, in addition to taxes.

It is a lucky thing that people give to the church. As Jesus said when Judas wanted to sell perfume to help the poor: Don't use it for that...."the poor are always with us". The Catholic church in 2003 wisely heeded this advice and paid out $25.7 million to settle 243 child sexual abuse cases against Catholic priests. Just a drop in the bucket--but protection money for priests is surely wisely spent when you have as much land and lucre as the Church possesses.
