I don't understand the concept of pride in nationality.

(1) Saying you are proud to be an American implies you might be less proud if you weren't an American. Why shouldn't people from Canada, Norway or New Zealand be just as proud as we are? And if everyone is proud, what meaning does the pride have?

(2) 40% didn't even bother to vote in one of the most contentious elections in our history. So basically people they are saying they are proud to be citizens of a nation where 40% of the citizens don't give a sh**.

(3) Some of the people who most frequently express their pride in being citizens of the U.S. are also the quickest to denigrate those who disagree with them (i.e., Rush, Savage, Hannity). How can you say you are proud to be a U.S. citizen if you openly despise a significant proportion of U.S. citizens?

The entire concept is b.s.
