Booklocker and Electronic E-Books for Montgomery Students
Over the past few years, we have been searching for a way to securely distribute course books, packs and other digital material for our students. Up until recently, we have hit numerous barriers. Publishers have been reluctant to provide digital content because of the numerous copyright, distribution and usage problems.

Recently we [Montgomery MS] have partnered with MDRM, Dell and numerous publishers in piloting a digital rights management device codenamed "BookLocker".
" BookLocker" is a next-generation infrastructure that allows a secure solution for publishers to distribute, manage and update digital content while providing users a portable, friendly experience spanning multiple electronic devices including laptops, desktops, PDA's, tablets, smart phones and televisions.

We are encouraged by the results and are evaluating initial implementation strategies for limited number students in Spring of 2004. We think "Booklocker" could positively impact lall of our students in the very near future.

Sam, the acquisition of MDRM is especially important because it is aimed at non-consumer applications. Substituting flash memory and related equipment for hard copy school texts creates the kind of constant demand that immunizes a company from the volatility of a purely consumer market. As the technology develops, it may indeed work for health care and personal information. Still, I wonder whether one can underline or highlight certain portions of the text--a practice I often do.

A potential glut of flash memory? With developments like this, I doubt very much that we'll see a glut.
