Good evening B. Fred,
Never having taken a course in electrical engineering nor having read a book on EE from cover to cover I alas know nothing of how the bytes are ferried around.
For your personal use, here are two experiences,
An Egyptian friend went to Egypt with a VOIP cell phone which had he Toronto area code and used it in Egypt successfully for a short while, then it went into malfunction mode. He is back from Egypt and is trying to get the Canadian providing company to fix things. My sister uses Vonage; Vonage Canada exists. She is most satisfied with VOIP on Vonange from the point of view of economy. She has not tried it in exotic places far away. She does point out that the VOIP phone doesn't do 911, so she has to keep her regular phone service just for 911.
Good luck,if things work out you'll hopefully save a bundle.
Malcolm
P.S. As far as investment interest, I suspect that if the experiences of the past still hold true, whatever is popular will be provided by 67 companies, beating each other to shreds with competing products.
