In response to your question, the answer in my opinion is" Procreation and survival of the species . Any people/nation must promote and protect the "family". I am not particularly religious but a People must promote ideas and laws which lead to continuation of the nations people etc. Thus you see the old ideas is Catholism and marriage and family laws. Europe which has become more Modern and Secular is an example of what happens when the family declines.The muslims with their old ideas are procreating. Marriage is a means to this end- procreation and thus has special place and priveleges. JMHO Rich

Very simply.........to have children. To prevent them from having to carry the stigma of being considered bastards. At least that is how it works in my circle of friends and family. Most people are willing to give up whatever economic or legal freedoms to make sure that doesn't happen. M Why get married
