I think that the events of the past few years indicate that traumatic events serve only to reinforce the mythology. I think it will take something really wonderful and unexpected to make people want to be part of the reality based community. The end of the cold war did that to some extent, all of a sudden there was a refreshing absence of fear and loathing for a short period (to some if was refreshing, to others it was armageddon). Maybe we will wake up one morning to find that all the muslims have changed their names to Bob and Judy and embraced Jesus sufficiently to satisfy us. Would help if they kicked in some free oil, too.
