As 1 of the 26 Qualcomm has an agenda, but not necessarily a lock over the long haul. Not easy to clarify for the non-technical reader, but variability among the possible outcomes is clear. see: Message 20912033 especially:3gpp.org ----------------------------------------------------- I'm looking at statements like this:2.1.5 REV-WS006: Views on the study of OFDM-HSDPA, China Mobile Chunfeng Cui (China Mobile) presented this contribution Abstract To meet the rapid development of data services, we need the high rate packet network. Now it is the proper time to discuss the issue of the UTRAN evolution. We think HSDPA based on R5 is important in the coming years, but with the increase of requirement we will need more efficient solutions in 3GPP several years later. We think OFDM will be one of the most promising technologies in the future. We suggest setting up a work item to standardize OFDM in 3GPP as early as possible, the reasons are as follows: - The data services will have a tremendous and fast increase in a long-term view, and the market change is unpredictable. So the more efficient technology will be needed to meet the requirement, and the standard work should start earlier. - The conclusion of the technical report [1] shows that the performance and the complexity of OFDM-HSDPA outperform those of WCDMA-HSDPA with “advanced” receiver. Furthermore, it also shows that there are no indications that the introduction of OFDM in UTRAN is not feasible for the downlink. Comments Bernt Haberland (Alcatel) asked if China Mobile has any technology in mind for the uplink. Chunfeng clarified that at a first stage OFDM for the downlink should be studied, farther in the future the application of OFDM in the uplink would be studied. The applicability of OFDM in the downlink would be for both FDD and TDD Chunfeng explained that the timeframe for the conclusion of the study would be 2006.
