The Whites in NH are geologically very old mountains and warn down... with the highest being 6288 ft./1636m. But in climbing mountains it's the elevation gained that counts and some of these require traversing 3800-4300 ft to put a foot on a summit. That's a lot of work and fun.... <smile>

Mt Washington has some of the most sever weather ever recorded in the world... as it sits at the confluence of some major weather and jet stream patterns. It's winter slopes are used to prepare Mt Everest and Himalayan expedition climbers for what they'll encounter.

The surrounding mountains like Mt Hale are effected by Washington's weather... conditions are volatile and change quickly so one has to take some care when climbing... even in the summer. On this New Years Day climb an expected front was coming through and temps dropped 20° in just 3 hours.

Looking up or standing near or climbing on those big mountains like Chiginagak is - AWESOME.
