Has the camera phone upgrade cycle to wane or was this is just a result of some market share shifts? Radio Shack will report on January 13th....if they were down as well, it would be hard to see CDMA handset sales as having had a good quarter in the US.

CC is losing market share, but a larger trend is probably a shift from third-party retailers to direct sales. In Sprint's case, they are actively expanding their direct retail presence, in part due to expanding data services requiring a more capable sales force than a third-party can usually offer. Online sales through sprintpcs.com could also be in play. Anecdotally, all of the new handsets I saw post-Xmas were direct purchases, with the biggest trend being camera phones for youths.

Radio Shack will report on January 13th

I also show Carphone Warehouse(UK distributor) and Samsung(8PM) on the 13th, busy day for news.

BTW, while looking at Carphone's website, they are offering the LG U8120 for free with a 12 month contract on "3", and the line rate is half off too. Very aggressive for a popular handset. The Free/Almost Free deal for the Nokia 7600 is still on too.

carphonewarehouse.com

LG Deal:

carphonewarehouse.com

Nokia Deal:

carphonewarehouse.com

Why exactly would anyone not take one of those, is there any reason to buy a GSM phone any more?

Mike Zafirovski Hits the Bricks

I suspected this might happen.

He didn't have a flawless record, particularly on the CDMA side, but he got em back on track.

Motorola's loss.

My jury is still out on Ed Zander. He talks the talk. I'm not sure he walks the walk.

>> Motorola President, COO Zafirovski to Resign

Just one year after former Sun Microsystems exec Ed Zander joined Motorola Inc. as chairman and CEO, Mike Zafirovski, president and COO, has resigned from the company, amid speculation that he wasn’t comfortable playing second fiddle.

Zafirovski was passed over for Motorola’s top job after then CEO Chris Galvin, grandson of Motorola’s founder, stepped down in September 2003 following a dispute with the board over the direction of the company.

A Motorola spokeswoman told Electronic News that at the time Motorola’s board was seeking to fill the CEO post, Zafirovski was an “extremely strong candidate,” but Zander was ultimately chosen. The company does not intend to appoint a replacement and Zander is to assume Zafirovski’s responsibilities.

“My experience at Motorola has been very rewarding,” said Zafirovski, in a statement, who is to remain president and COO until January 31, after which he is to serve in an advisory role during the transition of responsibilities to Zander.

Zafirovski, a former General Electric executive, was named president and COO in July 2002 and is credited with quickly returning the company’s struggling wireless-phone business to profitability and increasing market share.

“It’s been a great team effort, and I want to thank all the Motorola employees for their unmatched dedication, support and thirst for innovation. With the successful spin-off of our semiconductor business, Freescale, and our new organizational structure we have a stronger foundation in place today. I know Ed [Zander] and the team will do a great job moving forward,” he continued.

“This is a decision I have considered carefully and which I discussed at length with Ed. This is the right time for me to start considering other opportunities,” added Zafirovski.

Motorola recently reorganized its businesses and functions whereby the presidents of the company’s four business groups (mobile devices, networks, government and enterprise mobility solutions and connected home solutions) are to report to Zander as of January 31.

“On behalf of Motorola’s employees, customers and shareholders, I want to thank Mike for his many contributions to Motorola,” said Zander in a statement.

“Mike’s intense focus on improving the company’s operations and product quality has helped us execute on our commitments, enabling Motorola to achieve increased customer satisfaction and strong financial performance. I know Mike will be very successful in whatever he chooses to do next,” he added. <<
