The Depression was 75 years ago. Social Security was a depression era program. Why wasn't it phased out a long time ago?

Can someone explain to me why we are knocking our shitty little SS plan while we allow our government officials to have MULTIMILLION DOLLAR plans which we pay for and they get with even minimal service? I think its a government PLOY to take our eyes off where we are REALLY GETTING SCREWED. jdn
