It's interesting to think about where Russia's path may lead. With the loss of empire, there's no reason to think Russia should be more important, economically, socially, etc., than a large Poland (and only then if they can figure out how to get their economic and legal systems right).

Of course it might end up a lot less important. Argentina was at one time the 6th largest (and healthiest) economy in the world, and Buenos Aires was the capital of South America (and an important city). Will Russia in 2035 look like Argentina in 2004?
