Elroy, I was referring to the Russian Revolution, not the American Revolution.

But, to your point, history has demonstrated that democracy is no unalloyed good. It can become rule of the mob (which is really just rule by demagogues). Democratic institutions can be valuable when indeed they promote greater individual liberty.

They are also valuable as a check upon the too-dispassionate nature of republican governance.

Democracy cannot be a goal, despite Chomsky. It is just a means to an end.

Not all of the American founding fathers were historical pessimists. The Federalists certainly were, but the Jacksonians tore them to shreds.
