Nobody really knows how long your childhood smallpox vaccinations are good for.

I've seen "ten years" and "3 to 5 years," but that's inconsistent with the fact that everybody was vaccinated at age 1 but not again, except for booster shots if you went overseas.

You could probably get your military health records.

I think maybe I was given a booster shot before a trip to Mexico, but really can't remember, and would have no idea where to look.

What did the CDC say about people like us?

The briefing I attended was focused on understanding the threat Smallpox posed in 2002 and the need for all local medical organizations and associations to make a plan to cope with a Smallpox induced mass casualty situation. The focus was not on the vaccination process although some discussion on that came up during the Q&A. In every Smallpox discussion I've been in someone always has questions about the vaccinations efficacy.

Try www.cdc.gov for answers. They greatly expanded the website about two years ago. It is full of info and kept quite current. Go to the "Emergency Preparedness and Response" section for bio terror info. Lots of current info also at www.redcross.org and www.cia.gov/index.html
