The lesson to the west is that terror can be stopped if the terrorists are crushed.

In the early days of Israel, when they lacked military strength, some Jewish people were terrorists (ask the Brits if you doubt this). Some of them later became prominent in government. One as I recall was even assassinated for his peace attempts (by another Jew). The were not crushed, but did give up terrorism. Same is true for Mandela and blacks in S. Africa.

So, how do you know when a terrorist is fighting for a goal that is worth achieving? The modern state of Israel and majority rule in S. Africa both owe part of their existence to successful terrorism. Neither were crushed. From some POV, Israel is still accused of state terrorism, and racial killings still happen in S. Africa, but I would say terrorism is largely gone.
