I went to the cocktail reception put on by Alvarion and Lucent at the WCAI Symposium in San Jose. Not much said that the reception other than what has been disclosed.

Alvarion expects to forge additional agreements with the major telecomm systems and integrated services suppliers in the coming months. But there is bound to be some disappointment in delays of certification of WiMAX systems. The testing of equipment to meet system profiles under 802.16/WiMAX is an order of magnitude more difficult than for WiFi. The regime is more likened to military or aerospace projects than to consumer/SOHO electronics similar to typical WiFi junk. And expansion of plans for the mobile version, 802.16e, and incorporation of WiBro and other efforts has caused some needed delays. But these go to assure the long term momentum and competitiveness of the WiMAX effort.

Meanwhile. Alvarion has set up the Mobile Product Division which is centered in silicon valley around recently acquired interWAVE plus additional people from Alvarion. It is being headed up by Alvarion's CTO... so you can see the emphasis Alvarion places on the mobile product thrust.

All these things strengthen Alvarion's long term position... loooking goood!
