Don -

While the Shuffle isn't a "far" superior model, it actually is an improvement over existing competitors.

1 - It's smaller
2 - It's better looking
3 - It has greater capacity for the price
4 - The batteries are rechargeable
5 - It works with iTunes

The last point my be arguable, but in my opinion iTunes is also superior to all alternatives, so it's a plus to me.

Yes, the Shuffle lacks a display, but that's a design choice that makes sense within the context of a very inexpensive, very small mp3 player that also offers decent capacity for the price.

In a related story, environmentalists are picketing Apple for contributing to the problem of electronic waste. I think that by using rechargeable batteries with all iPods, they are actually helping more than they are hurting. (Though I do think they could improve their recycling policies for old equipment. You should be able to take any old Apple product back to any Apple store for recycling. It would make a lot of sense from a marketing standpoint.)
