At least the chickens, who are reared by the Amish, I believe, have nice, outside lives before they die. Frankly, I probably will not have cats again after these two die (of old age, hopefully). They really are meat eaters. Dogs can be successfully and healthily vegetarian. Cats are much trickier, according to my vet. Having tried vegetarian cat food, which is extremely expensive and must be mail-ordered, and having also had to throw it away after it was repeatedly rejected, I am left with some not so perfect alternatives. I do think that kittens just being weaned could learn to accept vegetarian food, since they would know nothing else. I am sure they would still want to hunt birds and mice, but at least I wouldn't have meat kibble on my kitchen counter. But since I believe that being the guardian of animals means taking care of them for the rest of their lives, not abandoning them when things get dicey or inconvenient for some reason, it seems only reasonable to make sure they do not starve to death in my care. So I've made the best compromise I can. Any honest animal rights activist would tell you that it is almost impossible to avoid using animals in some small way in life. It is the TRYING that is important, because every bit of trying saves an animal's life somewhere. Film for cameras, for example, is made from gelatin. I am hopeful that by the time most people have stopped eating meat in any form, there will be technological advances and film can be made without gelatin. Or we will all use memory sticks, instead of film. That does not mean that ethically it is okay for me to eat marshmallows right now, though, just because I cannot get film without gelatin. I CAN get marshmallows without it, or avoid them altogether. And it certainly doesn't justify eating the cow that made the gelatin. There are a lot of rationalizations people make that are not very logical if you think things through. Nothing at all in the above situation justifies raping cows, though. Man has absolutely no real need for milk from cows, or for beef, for that matter.
