China destroys 60 mn pirated audio-visual discs in one day:

[World News]: Beijing, Jan 13 : Amid a high-level Sino-US discussion on protecting Intellectual Property Rights, the Chinese government today announced that it has destroyed 63.35 million pirated audio-visual discs, the largest-ever, last Tuesday.

"This is the largest-ever during similar campaigns for four consecutive years to rectify China's audio-visual markets," the state-run Xinhua news agency quoted officials with the Chinese Ministry of Culture as saying.

All the destroyed discs were confiscated last year, among which 13 million were destroyed in southern China's Guangdong province and five million in the eastern Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. China's largest city as well as the Communist nation's commercial hub, Shanghai also participated.

In 2004, local governments have investigated 555,368 companies engaging in the manufacture or sale of audio-visual products and confiscated 154 million illegal discs, the highest number since similar campaigns were launched in 2001, the Ministry said.

Since 2001, more than 450 million illegal audio-visual discs have been confiscated, the Ministry added.

Meanwhile, officials from China and the United States met here today to discuss issues concerning the IPR.

Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Yi and US Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans attended the conference, held annually.

IPR has been a key issue of concern for the US. China has promised to intensify its crackdown on the infringement of IPR. PTI
