Carter was an odd duck. Remember when he claimed he was attacked by a rabbit while fishing. I personally will never forget his speech during the oil crisis in the late 70s when he told us that the problem was not the lack of oil but rather our negativism. His prescription for the economy was less consumption and he produced the highest interest rates of my life time. His response to the Iranian hostage crisis was a bunch of helicopters that failed in the desert in Iran. When he narrowly defeated Kennedy in 1980 for the nomination I remember Kennedy avoiding him on the stage while Carter hunted him down to shake his hand. He was by any account the single least effective president in the last half of the 20th century. The press has done its level best to rehabilitate him personally but any fair account of his presidency has to include "disappointment".
