>A lot? I thought a few......you many know better.

The only Israeli news source I ever read these days at all (and not very often) is Haaretz, which is pretty left-wing. And that's the impression I got from it.

>Nope.....just three years ago on national Israeli tv.

No, I meant Abbas's statement. I know about Sharon's.

>Its only been a week........you must be very observant. <g>

He's been de facto in charge for three months now.

Regardless, this is all silly. It never gets us anywhere. The more things change there, the more they stay the same.

tejek, I wish it was all posturing and just a big game for show. However, that is the tragedy of the Middle East. There really are extremists Jews who believe that it is their God given right to live on land in the West Bank. They believe that if they leave that land, they will be going against God. They are every bit as fanatical as the Palestinians are. In fact, one of the Jewish settlers assassinated Yitzak Rabin, which was the man who almost brought peace to the region.

So Sharon is as close to a miracle worker as the Israelis will ever have. He is known for being to the right and has been a military hero. So that gives him clout to fight the rightwing extremists with credibility. But I think we are seeing that even Sharon may not be up to the task.

So as much as I blame the impotent Palestinian leaders for the troubles, the rightwing Israeli settlers are every bit as much at fault. Until Israel gives up both Gaza and the West Bank, they will NEVER have peace. I think Sharon finally wised up to that fact. Let's see if he can pull it off. Gaza is a good start.
