Ans: Fatah. What political party claimed credit for the Karni crossing attack, along with Hamas? Ans: Fatah. There, do you get it now? Fatah is not a different group from itself. There is only one Fatah. It claimed the credit for the attack. It didn't even pretend that the terrorists were somebody else. Now if Abbas keeps saying "I'm against the attacks", and Fatah keeps doing the attacks, then Abbas is wearing a sign that says "I am a Powerless Figurehead" that everybody can read. But not you, apparently. Abbas is going to have to prove he is a viable candidate for actual leadership before anybody is going to throw good money after bad trying to "strengthen" him. To be strong, Abbas must show he can more things forward with Israel...But if Israel says get rid of the terrorists first and insure they cannot strike -- then you have nothing to go on because he is almost certainly not going to be able to do that.</ Israel already did the the goodwill gestures - release of prisoners, pulling back for the elections. If Abbas really wants to move things forward, which in this context means establishing the parameters of long term truce, he is going to have to show that he is prepared to answer for his end of the deal, which means that he must enforce his policy on the PA. The Israelis would be wrong if they insist on perfect success, but Abbas has to be strong enough to intend to do it and to try to do it. So far, he has said he has no intention of doing it. No intention means that the terrorists continue on their merry way, impeded not at all by anyone in the PA, only by the Israelis. To this future course, the Israelis will answer with a finished security fence and closed border crossings. As they should.
