Our medical schools were the best in the world when I was a guidance counselor at a high school. Canada had a good one the name of which I forget now but some of my students went there. McGill..that's it.

It was extremely difficult to get INTO medical school as standards were so high.

Many foreign students came here to study.

Now, what has happened .. the paper work for Doctors has become so extreme...that many of the good Doctors have left the practice. My cousin in Atlanta who was a Yale graduate and a very good Doctor left the field early because of the red tape, law suits, high cost of liability insurance and deteriorating situations in hospitals...

Too bad.

I went to a GROUP office the other day. All three gastroentrolgists were from foreign countries. This is not to imply that they are not good. My Malaysian Doctor was difficult to understand, that's all. I have faith.

My Father had a Dr. from India. He was excellent.

Really great post.

I would point out that the United States also effectively subsidizes other countries because we are paying for drug R&D where other countries (like Canada) are able to get the same drugs paying only for the variable costs of production plus a small increment.

If we (US) weren't spending the money to advanced R&D their costs would be substantially higher. NOwhere is this more apparent than with chemo drugs, which can run thousands of dollars per dose and for which major clinical trials programs are conducted in the US at cost to the drug companies.
