Or is it that market penetration into a slow replacement cycle arena dominated by a monopoly takes time? Little more than a year ago, you could have said that Xeon was out-selling Opteron 100:1.

While I don't ascribe to the theory that AMD will take over huge chunks of the market all at once or even over the course of the next year, I do think that they are making progress and that they will slowly and steadily gain more respect and socket wins. After all, 10% market share from 0% in about a year isn't that bad. All in due course.

Nor do I ascribe to the theory that AMD is destined to remain the far inferior company without any hope of ever being more than an also-ran. Just because the stock has fluctuated around the same level for the last 20 years, has no impact on future price. The only thing constant is change.

P.S. Unrelenting pessimism irritates me as much as unrelenting optimism. There are a few here who should try a more realistic approach to investing.

Elmer,

A more realistic person would have asked why it appears that Xeon is outselling Opteron by what looks like almost 10 to 1. Is it that few people want Opteron or is it because AMD can't make them?

That's one interpretation. Another is that when AMD goes from being outsold by 100:1 to 50:1 to 25:1 to 10:1, AMD is on a roll.
