how come some of us know that people don't
become extremists/agitators/terrorists because
the hours are good, and those that hold the
power don't know it.

In Vietnam, some of those issues can be handled by "administrative forwarding costs".....bribes. In an old company I worked for we did it all the time with government officials. Folks at headquarters in the State heads would explode when they heard about it - they didn't understand it was just a way of doing business there if you wanted to get anything done. And, I know you've probably been through all that. The part about not letting foreign nationals into the regions - sounds like the paranoia is still there.
