Yes. For making such a stupid speculation.

Why is it stupid? Every aptitude test in the country shows that Asians do better at math than Caucasians, and that men do better than women. There is really no argument about that.

My daughter dropped out of pre-med at UCI because she couldn't cut the math against her male classmates, and she is very smart.

On the other hand, my sister was told by her pre-med Texas Prof back in the 50's that he wouldn't give her grades that would let her get into Med school. But those days are gone forever.

Mary,

Dr. Lawrence Summers has to go as President of Harvard University.

Why? For speculating at a forum that math ability is the reason for so few women in science?

Yes. For making such a stupid speculation.

There is no science behind that speculation. There is no, none, nothing, nada scientific evidence to support that speculation.

There is actually nothing to support your PC 'everyone is equal' statements. There is substantial science developed through the years to support gender differences, some cultural, some suspected of being genetic.

It just became real unpopular to do, speak of or fund any of this research because of bigots like you.

Science should speak for itself.

Women are far better at men at some things, men are better than women at others. This does not prevent male linguist or female scientists from emerging. Its about averages.

But if anyone even speaking about obvious and clear differences is met by opinions like yours - well its pretty difficult to have intelligent discussions.

The latest version of this is the discovery that certain medicines work better on certain races.

God forbid that we look at helping the sick - we need to preserve some perverted viewpoint of equality.

Next we are going to have to drop all medicine that looks at gender differences - no more constipation drugs for women only.

John

Mary, should Professor Ward Churchill of the University of Colorado be fired? Or do your sentiments on political correctness not apply here?

<<"As for those in the World Trade Center," the essay said, "well, really, let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break.">>

And, <<The essay goes on to describe the victims as "little Eichmanns," referring to Adolph Eichmann, who executed Adolph Hitler's plan to exterminate Jews during World War II.>>

Mary,

You have stated your belief that Lawrence Summers should be fired for his comments speculating about possible causes of gender differences in math ability.

I repeat a question I asked you about Ward Churchill; perhaps you missed the original post. Do you think that this professor at the University of Colorado, heavily supported and subsidized by Colorado taxpayers, should be fired for his comments about 9/11?

I think its important to express the idea that differences in ability or inclination can determine the relative number of people from different groups who are in different fields. A number of people seem to assume that an unequal or unrepresentative number is evidence for discrimination. It isn't good evidence for any such charge. The science behind difference in mental abilities between men and woman may be thin (thin isn't non-existent BTW), but so is the evidence that there is no such difference. Also inclination has to be considered. Even if the sexes were exactly equal in their mental abilities in every area (something that IMO is unlikely) different levels of men an women in different fields in still not a sign of unjust or unfair discrimination by the people selecting for that field.
