That's a fact, disease did most of the work ... without it, european colonisation would not likely have happened on the same scale ... probably in changed form as well, more centred on maritime navigation and trade ... there were places where natives were fairly well organised and would have been better able to defend themselves, more so with the introduction of steel and gunpowder, and the euros would have had difficulty bringing in numbers sufficient to prevail .... there likely would have still been settlement, but of a more peaceful fashion, euros and natives ending up mestizos in few generations

There is a story of a spanish officer sent to quell an insurrection somewhere, he found it stronger than reported, went back to base for reinforcements, and when he arrived again half the people were dead, the rest sick or thoroughly beaten down ..... i was just looking for Michener's Covenant, sure i've still got it somewhere ..... cheers
