I agree with you on one very significant point. To quote you: "we have lost the moral leadership". We sure have. Moral leadership begins with the people. As soon as we started to promote a culture of personal choice for everyone, including glorifying deviant behavior, that is when we started to lose our moral authority. This nation is obsessed with the morals promulgated by Hollywood, which is to say, there are no morals.

Why do you think Abu Graib happened? I blame Rumsfeld and everyone down the chain for promoting an atmosphere of permissiveness when it came to ignoring human rights in the face of the possibility of acquiring actionable intelligence. However, I also blame Hollywood and the media for brainwashing the young generation of today, who grew up in an anything goes culture. It's no wonder they thought it was funny to humiliate those Iraqis and they took pictures and videos of it all as if it was some grand day on the beach.

If we started with morality at home, then those values would carry our young through the worst of trials, including wars. It was lack of a moral foundation that made for soldiers willing to take orders that they should have known were fundamentally against anything Christians would have taught.

>Every empire in history has come to a bad end, it's not a surprise.

Yeah, the crazy thing here is that it could happen over the course of only a generation or two -- usually it seems like it's a longer process...
