If his short picks carried such weight, why should volume have increased when he announced them? Why would anyone want to buy?

You certainly can't deny that his picks carried great weight and that the creation of volume was at least one of the strategies for releasing the picks on SI. The volume was great in comparison to prior volume.

After the bubble had burst and trading interest dropped off, he lost his clout. He turned to more thinly traded penny stocks. That may have been when he opted to get an edge using FBI files.
