Good points cosmic,

re: "I was out with my friend this weekend speculating about how many POUNDS of oil was used to fabricate my digital camera which only uses rechargeable batteries now (better watch how I dispose of those!). All that energy to melt the glass, refine the semiconductors, melt the aluminum, run the lathes, etc. Probably 30-40 pounds (maybe more, methinks). For a computer, it might be 5 to 10 times that of my camera.

Hard to be a creature on the planet and have NO foot print. Dying cows and melting glaciers are a warning sign."

I have written similar things on how I have to nudge some of my liberal friends into believing they that leave a 'footprint' while they sit on their redwood deck surrounding a redwood house, drinking chardonnay in a crystal glass, snacking away, while admiring their gold and silver chains, and all the while giving the loggers, miners and grape growers Hell. While their children in their rooms are on-line with those computers that are loaded with precious metals and plastics.. And yes, that Volvo in their driveway has a little metal and plastic and still runs mostly on petrol products..

But so be it, my philosophy is to leave as little 'footprint' and as much as possible for future generations, even though a person can afford MUCH more.. All this within the context of the present and our society, as I do not expect anyone, including myself:

To live in a cave and garden with a stick..<g>

Yes, I realize everything we use has some environmental impact. Still, I think there is a huge difference between the impact of heating water and having Teflon oozing out of every pore. And most importantly, I think this kind of argument often serves as an excuse for people to just throw up their hands and do whatever (which I think is specious, obviously).

To me, it is sort of like saying we might as well eat cows because plants have feelings, too. This is a line of unreasoning that is often used by meat eaters in an attempt to make vegetarians look ridiculous.
