Thomas Jefferson's wife had a slave who was her half sister (same father). After his wife died, this woman gave birth to a number of children whose father was either Jefferson or his brother or another male relative.

These children were, at minimum, 3/4 European in ancestry.

What race were they?

According to Virginia law, and the law everywhere else in America at the time, they were black.

So were people who were 1/32 in African ancestry.

I would venture to guess that a number of people who think they are black have more Irish blood than African blood. And vice versa -- a number of people who think they are Irish actually have more African blood than they realize.

As far as that goes -- how can you tell whether someone is Irish, English, German, Scandinavian, Russian, or Dutch, just by looking at them?
