I can tell an English bulldog from a German shepherd just by looking at them, too, but, there is also only one race of dogs. ;^)

Scientists used to hypothesize that some were descended from dog-like animals other than wolves, but genetic testing recently demonstrated that this hypothesis, while reasonable, was false. All dogs are descended from wolves.

..realizing that I could largely do the same with English or German whites.

How do you tell English from Germans by physical appearance only - ignoring cues like fashion, etc.?

Rural Pennsylvania was settled heavily by Germans. Rural New England by English. Could you tell someone of NE Yankee descent from someone of PA German descent?

I'm skeptical frankly.
