Not so erudite an answer as Ion's, but I remember the little Sho man in "The Gods Must Be Crazy" apologizing to an animal he had killed also and I thought just what you did: how we have lost our awareness of the process and no longer appreciate the connectedness of all life.
This same idea was discussed in Morality for Beautiful Women which I was reading last night.
You are not wrong at all.
