Well, you and I might find it acceptable, if not downright admirable and desirable, but the RW Christians calling in were very upset about that nasty little "sexual identity" phrase. They don't believe that gays are a treasure, I guess. I doubt they read the pledge with much of an open mind-- just saw that Sexual Identity thing and KNEW what this was REALLY about. One woman who called in said that she saw it as pushing acceptance of a lifestyle that is just not-- acceptable! When the host pointed out the difference between tolerance and respect and acceptance, she got pretty confused.
Which, when you think about it, is the problem with so many things. People with set beliefs have a really hard time opening themselves enough to be objective and it is so easy to twist things to fit into your conceptions and much more difficult to stretch your mind enough to include differences. When that happens, you have all these pieces lying around chaotically.
There were also calls about when you are born black you are black forever (unless you are Michael Jackson), but you don't HAVE to be gay. Agh. I never last long with talkshows because I start yelling at people. Alone in my car, screaming, at my dashboard.
Dear god. On another thread, I confessed to watching Supernanny. Now I admit I listen to talkshows and converse with the radio. Can I be banned for this proletariat behavior?

It appears this campaign is aimed at young children and I question the wisdom of using the term "sexual identity."

A seven year old is unlikely to be aware of the various "sexual identities" and I don't think that is an appropriate age to explain the differences between heterosexuals, homosexuals, bi-sexuals, transexuals, and all the other possibilities.

Re the whole diversity thing, I have a problem with it because it just isn't true ....

"Tolerance is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. I believe that America's diversity is its strength"

I don't see any evidence that every person is, in fact, a treasure, or that America's strength is derived from its diversity. Many nations with very little or no diversity do very well.

All in all it's a harmless bit of pablum, but when I worked for the federal government I had it shoved down my throat on a daily basis and it gets old after a while.
