When some classifications become amorphous, and cause more trouble than good - it is time to reconsider its usage.

I see the issue not with the classification, but rather with the "cause more trouble". Deal with why a classification leads to trouble. That is the root issue.

The history of race, religion, or group problems in general is a failure of one group to extend moral treatment to other groups. This is the issue you should attack. Instead, I find people trying to deny that the groups are "really different".

I have no problem admitting groups are different. I work at trying to accord moral treatment to everything. If your view is that GOD (or evolution!) has made you, your family, your ethnic group, your race, your religion, your species, ... special, and they should inherit the earth and everything in it, then its pretty easy to see why one might murder a sibling, a neighbor, engage in ethnic genocide, persecute other religions, or trash the environment. No rocket science required to understand this.
