Your history books must be different than mine. Both France and England were monarchies at the time of the American revolution. In fact, the American revolution lead to the French revolution and to the English parliament taking an increasing amount of power from the English monarchy.

I learned outside of TX......that might explain the differences. <g>

The Magna Carta was the first in a series of documents and events that limited the power of the British monarchy. It was the Brits who provided the beginnings of the American democracy.

The French had a limited form of democracy by the mid 18th century. The revolt against the French monarchy began a few years after the American revolution.

In the beginning, America was hardly a true democracy. Only white men could vote........the freedoms of women and native Americans was rather limited and many white families had slaves. Hardly a democracy........more a wannabe.
