I also always thought it ironic that to be a motivational speaker you had to come from an "unclean" past. Somewhere on SI I wrote a post about a mock interview where the applicant was denied such a job because he never took drugs, never beat his wife, never was convicted of a crime, etc. The point being, as you imply, that we seem to give more credence to so-called reformed transgressors than people who were able to find ways to not give into temptation in the first place. I guess it comes down to the audience we are trying to serve. At an AA meeting it's probably more effective to say "I was one of you... here's how I put my life back together" as opposed to "Here's how I ended up not being like you." And when it comes to prevention, there's no denying those who have been through something offer better insight than those that steered clear. C'est la vie.
