Karen,

It has deteriorated around here, but it cuts both ways. After dragging the discussion of race vs ethnicity in genetic medicine back to 'firing' Dr Summers, Mary ends with this line:

I still think Dr Summers should resign and I still don't like your politics. So there.

A very astute and mature don't you think?

Since we were now discussing free speech I asked if:

Should Robert Byrd resign?

She responded by stating that:

Absolutely not. He is a great American. He is a patriot. I happen to agree with him, but even if I didn't agree with him, I should put my life on the line to allow him to present his views. This is very fundamental to democracy.

Then I respond - and according to you am starting a food fight.

Personally I would not put my life on the line to defend hate speech, but then thats just me.

John

I really don't see anything wrong with asking someone why they admire an ex KKK, Grand Dragon of the Realm or Wizard or what ever he was. In fact one would assume that individual agrees with Senator Byrd's outlook. How can anyone know if they don't ask and help clear up any confusion? (Although his opinions are so archaic and racist, it's difficult to believe anyone would agree.)

It has been recognized by millions of civilized people that Byrd's racist background is appalling. Yet he gets a pass by liberals when he continues to display that racism......as he did yesterday on the Senate floor. Mary said: "He is a great American. He is a patriot"..... I would like to understand why anyone with that kind of background could be considered "great" or "a patriot" let alone become a US Senator?

This attempt to stifle conversation into Robert Byrd's background by liberals must end. These are perfectly legitimate questions, but I guess they are just too sensitive a subject for some? Answering those questions would take them off the table, but until they are, don't expect them to go away any time soon.

What is appalling imo, is that we all know that if Byrd were a conservative he'd be drummed out of office or relegated to the back of the room.......as Trent Lott was for his remarks at Strom Thurmond's birthday party.

And if anyone on this thread were to be expected to start a food fight......it would be you. -gg-
