I agree with you that growth into a Caliphate would be a real threat and that the current threat is not immediate and existential in a military sense but could be at some point. Whether that makes it an existential threat NOW is semantics. I won't nitpick it.

I will, however, argue that since it's not an immediate, existential military threat, my point still stands. If we're going to choose military tools to obviate the Caliphate, then the powers that been need to have a good enough case to persuade enough troops to participate or choose some other combination of tools from the toolkit. The toolkit only holds as many troops as volunteer.
