I view it as "there are givers, and there are takers"....rather than It's slavery, pure and simple.

You had several ideas in your post. Yes, to employers, especially smaller ones vying for a candidate that was at least as good, and probably better than one that would go to a larger company, the employer had to be creative to "offer better deals"...

If I understand Thomas PM Barnett's thoughts correctly, we will need warriors and peacekeepers in the military of the future...we need different types of aptitudes and talents in those positions. If we offered training in either or both types of 'needs', we might have the people for the jobs, and the people would have training they could use in their future careers...
