Last night the History Channel had a special on Pearl Harbor, followed by a screening of "Tora, Tora, Tora." That was a war.

The Spanish coined the word "guerrilla", a diminutive of "guerra" (war), in order to describe attacks by paramilitary or irregular forces.

The term being used for the current-day events in the Sunni Triangle by the Baathists and other Sunni dead-enders and Al Sadr's Shias is "insurgency." I would argue that "insurgency" gives too much dignity to what is going on in Iraq, but that's just me.

Both "guerrilla attacks" and "insurgency" would come under the broader heading of "unconventional warfare."

9/11 and other attacks by Al Qaeda I think would more properly be called "sabotage." Or just "terrorism." But not "war."
