There are many theories and not one of them fits exactly. Geologists are still arguing over the genesis of Hemlo over 20 years after it was found. The mine geologists do a lot of drilling to find more ore and do not seem to dwell too much on why it is there. Over the last 20 years, they have not found another Hemlo with their geological models: newmont.com "When the Hemlo camp was first discovered, a hydrothermal shear-hosted model was favoured by the majority of workers in the camp; this remains the majority view. As information from the underground mines allows new insight, arguments have also been advanced for a porphyry-related model. This model attributes both metal, alteration, and structural site preparation to fluids derived from an intrusive MLP and implies that nearby porphyry bodies could be attractive exploration targets. It has provided much of the basis for Golden Giant’s recent exploration efforts in the Hemlo Camp." There are 3 theories of genesis that I know of in order of popularity: (1) hydrothermal shear-hosted. (2) porphyry-related. (3) metamorphic fluid related. What makes Hemlo Hemlo is that there 25 million ounces of gold there. Hemlo was not found by using a geological model of another orebody. It was found by risk, by drilling and ever since, geologists have been trying to pigeonhole it. I do not know of another producing mine which resembles Hemlo. Perhaps someone else does. B
