And what if they turn out to be hostile to Israel? Won't that be a problem as well?

Its entirely possible that a free, democratic Iraq might make as a staple of their own foreign policy that the geographies of the pre-'67 war Israel, the West Bank, the Golan Heights and the Gaza Strip should be combined into one country (temporarily called NewCo!). NewCo should grant equality to ALL its citizens regardless of ethnicity or religion, and the citizens would be the 6-7 million Israelis and 6-7 million Palestinain refugees that live in that geography. That sounds like pretty much like an equality-based, freedom loving American style policy, even though it would mean the end of the idea of a "Jewish" state and a "Jewish" homeland.

mindmeld, do you support Iraqis freedom to enforce that policy (which is based a lot on what most of us consider American values) through military force?

It has never made sense to me how George went to the Rose Garden with the interim Iraqi prime minister and expressed his support for Iraq as a country where all religions can practice equally, then two days later went to the rose garden with Sharon to express his support for Israel as a Jewish state. Why should Iraq be for everyone (American values) and Israel for Jews (implying a fundamental racial/ethnic preference, and totally non-American value).

A prosperous Iraq would have much less of a reason to be hostile toward Israel. Remember why such hostility is fostered in the first place.
