Z,

Why do we need to cut social programs?

Reason #1: That's where the money is
Reason #2: They increase at a rate that is faster than the overall growth of the economy and are swallowing ever larger slice of the pie. The rate of growth of the benefits is unsustainable.

(Medical benefits are the prime example of the above).

Joe

Z, Defense does make up 1/3 of our budget

According to the budget I got in the mail, we spent $357B on the military and $116B on homeland security. That's a total of $473B, which is 17% of total expenditures ($2.763T). Or if you exclude SS expenditures (which we really ought to be doing anyway, along with excluding SS revenues from the general budget), you'll end up with total expenditures of $2.262T, of which 21% is defense and homeland security.

Sorry, I don't have a link, but it's pretty clear to me that defense is NOT 1/3 of our budget.
