"Now I think prolonged, intense suffering is the only way things will change"

You say it so well, and sadly you are correct.

I thought the term limits movement was a good idea

Not terribly. No institutional memory under term limits. I think we are starting to find out lobbiests are exerting more influence.

Besides, with term limits, no Sen Byrd. Ugh.

Boy, I really hope you're wrong. I detest the theory that crisis is like the heat of the forge, but know too much history to contest it strongly.

The Democrats, as we know them, grew out of the Red movement. There are good reasons to believe that one of the reasons we didn't go Red is that the New Deal took the wind out of the sails of the communists by stealing their planks. My paternal grandfather was a worker on Hoover Dam and several other projects - they were dirt poor. My mother came from a merchant/professional class, hurt badly by the Depression.

I'm a hybrid of these classes and don't really have absolute allegiance to either. I want what's good for everyone and you're right, that's probably not going to happen for a long while.
