You should read some Howard Zinn. The Socialists and Communists were a force in America in the thirties. They were co-opted and neutralized by the Democrats tossing a bone or two to ordinary people, like Social Security, but the Democrats didn't "grow out of" Communism or Socialism. European governments today have both Communist and Socialist parties that actually elect representatives and have some clout. They've been demonized to such an extent here that they have none. If I ran the country, we'd have a Scandinavian style Socialism here, one that valued people over capital without giving up capitalism.
