So g, are you a rockhound. Wassup, with the name? I'll tell you about my screen name - I chose it because unlike a deity, THE Cosmic Force, I'm in the image of that, making me a little "c" cosmic force. Sort of a play on the Big C and little c communism thing, I suppose.

I think Bush feels Republicans will control the country for the forseeable future, and in "reforming" SS, he can relieve the government of repaying the piles of IOU's in the "lockbox", which begin to fall due after 2018. That's why, to him, it seems like a "crisis". To be somewhat fair, they've been left by governments of both parties, but if an accounting were done, I think we'd find the majority came from the Reagan and current Bush administrations.

When they were put in the "lockbox", they constituted a promise by the government to the people, which Bush now wants to break. To make good on the promise would mean not spending 10 times more on our military than anyone else in the world. Remember when we had a surplus because Bill Clinton wasn't spending it? He wanted to invest the surplus to deal with this problem, but got no help from the Republicans.
